Audio Books

May 4, 2008 by fromthechair

I recently finished the tenth anniversay of Tuesdays with Morrie. It is a memoir about this guy that contracts ALS. I was just curious how many people have read this, listened to it or even heard of it.  Also, just out of couriousity any suggestions of book you have read that I might enjoy?

I pretty much read all genres. I am currently reading a paranormal thriller by Kim Harrison, Every Witch Way But Dead. The author likes to use western titles and change them up just a bit.  I just like how you cannot predict the story line, it keeps the reader guessing. It is book 2 or 3, the first one is Dead Witch Walking.  The lead character is a freelance bounty hunter looking for other superrnatural creatures - vampires, faires, etc..

I also am reading some books by Marlee Matlin. Her stories are about relationship of a hearing girl and a deaf girl, named Megan. It is about how they develop a freindship and it cover the growth of that freindship.  She is a good writer.

So, as you can see I listen to a variety of books and I am always interested in finding out what others read. So, please feel free to share your favarites with us.

Have a sunny day!

Dating- how do we find a date?

March 9, 2008 by fromthechair

I have been searching for that first date for about a year. I have been using a dating service, that begins with E. I find myself in a dating super postion. I’m physically disabled only and I find that I’m not attracted to women who are mentally challenged, but find that “normal” women seemed turned off by my chair. A few have opened conversation with me, but closed it later, before ever meeting me in a non scripted communication.

How do I get to meet good women who can look past my disabilities and see abilities? I am just wondering if other disabled people find themselves in the same position? If so, how do you combat the stereotype, get a woman who wants to go out with you? Women - how do you want to be approached, when I don’t need a care taker, I have PCAs; I’m looking for a friend to go out with?

I am reaching out to you all, hoping to share experiences and ideas.

Living as a young disabled adult in MN

February 23, 2008 by fromthechair

Hi- I never thought I would be living in my own apartment. I always thought I would have to stay at home with my parents.  But all that changed when my family moved back to Minnesota. Minnesota has many programs to support independent living and so I began the journey to getting my own place to live. Inw live in my own apartment and I have to have PCA (Personal Care Assistance) and and other help to get along.  After 2 years of going through many bad PCAs and bad PCA providers, my family decided to create their own provider business and introduced a model of service that gets me the help I need, the way I want it and helps me to retain high quality PCAs for longer.

Choice Healthcare of Minnesota is the name of our company. We are able to pay better for our PCAs beccause our administrative cost stay low. Each client has a plan for what activities the PCA needs to do for them and how they like their cares to be done. When a new PCA starts they have 2 weeks to get trained, then they are evaluated and if they are good, they get a pay increase.

We are always willing to share our care model with current PCA providers should they have an interest in improving their services. Or if you are disabled and would like more information on how to improve your quality of life and get good PCAs let me know and I will get you more information.

I would be interested in hearing how you manage your PCA needs and ideas you have for making this process easier.  PCAs out there I would like to hear from you too!

Future blogs will be about things I like and know about that you might like to.
